Bonuses Not A Right – Finance Minister Says Govt Will Thank Those Who Worked Hard Through The Year

Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube has said that the government will make sure that it rewards civil servants who worked hard throughout the year.

The Minister refused to reveal finer details on how the government was going to carry out the bonuses issue choosing to say that the bonuses should not be an entitlement. Speaking during the ongoing 2019 Parliamentary pre-Budget conference, the Minister said,

I feel that we need to walk the talk. In the previous budgets, we have said we will do something about making sure that we deal with this issue of freezing non-critical posts, enforcing retirement policy.”

And the bonus, you know, should not be an entitlement, but it should be within affordable levels. So, I won’t say what will happen with bonus this year yet, but you can be sure that we are going to do something that will be a thank you to those who have worked so hard through the year, but at same time cognizant of the need to tighten our belts.

Mthuli Ncube’s predecessor as Finance Minister, Patrick Chinamasa unsuccessful tried to cut civil servants’ bonuses twice only to be publicly overruled on both occasions by (then) President Robert Mugabe.
